President Droupadi Murmu to Address Odisha Assembly Today in Historic First

President Droupadi Murmu will arrive in Bhubaneswar today to deliver a special address to the Odisha Legislative Assembly, marking the first time in history that a sitting President will address the House. The event coincides with the opening day of the Winter Session, making it a historic moment in the state’s legislative proceedings.

After her address, President Murmu is expected to visit Room No. 11, a chamber of personal significance, as it served as her office during her tenure as an MLA and Minister between 2000 and 2004, when she handled portfolios including Fisheries and Transport. The Assembly premises, especially Room No. 11, have been specially decorated to honour her visit.

Tight Security and Traffic Restrictions in Capital

In preparation for her arrival, Bhubaneswar has been placed under stringent security. Police have deployed forces at major intersections, with traffic curbs and movement restrictions enforced across key routes near the Assembly. Senior security agencies conducted route inspections and rehearsals on Tuesday evening to ensure smooth arrangements.

Winter Session Begins with Key Legislative Agenda

The Winter Session of the Odisha Assembly officially begins today with the President’s inaugural address. On the second day, the House will take up the Supplementary Budget, setting the stage for crucial debates.

Speaker Pramila Mallik has urged all political parties to cooperate for a smooth, productive and respectful session. She held discussions with both ruling and opposition lawmakers during an all-party meeting to seek consensus for constructive debate.

Opposition and Ruling Parties Prepare for Heated Discussions

Opposition parties—including BJD and Congress—have readied strategies to target the government on major issues such as agriculture, women’s safety, unemployment, recruitment scams, law and order, mafia activities, and problems related to Mission Shakti. They have also called for adequate floor time to voice public concerns.

Meanwhile, the ruling BJP has outlined a counter-strategy aimed at defending government policies and responding to opposition allegations on key issues expected to dominate the session.

As Odisha gears up for this landmark event, all eyes remain on the Assembly, where the President’s presence will mark a defining moment in the state’s legislative history.
