Bhubaneswar: The Comprehensive Region Urban Transport (CRUT) has decided to introduce advanced safety systems in its electric buses to reduce road accidents and improve passenger safety across Odisha.
As part of the first phase, CRUT will install Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Driver Fatigue and Monitoring Systems (DFMS) in 270 electric buses operating in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri.
ADAS to Improve Road Safety
The ADAS technology will provide drivers with real-time alerts and assistance to help prevent potential accidents.
The system will be designed to warn drivers about possible collisions, vehicles in blind spots and unintended lane changes. It will also assist with functions such as emergency braking, reverse parking and maintaining a safe distance from vehicles ahead.
The technology is expected to provide drivers with additional support in identifying potential hazards and responding to them promptly.
Decision Follows Ama Bus Accident
The move comes after an accident involving an Ama Bus near Rupali Square in Bhubaneswar in January. The bus reportedly hit a stationary autorickshaw from behind, resulting in the death of the autorickshaw driver and injuries to a passenger.
Following such incidents, the introduction of technology-based safety measures is aimed at strengthening preventive measures and reducing the possibility of accidents involving public transport buses.
DFMS to Monitor Driver Alertness
Along with ADAS, CRUT will introduce a Driver Fatigue and Monitoring System (DFMS) to monitor the alertness of drivers while they are operating buses.
The system will detect signs of fatigue, drowsiness and distraction. If it identifies that a driver may not be sufficiently alert, it will issue warnings to prompt timely action.
Safety Upgrade for Public Transport
The installation of ADAS and DFMS in 270 electric buses is expected to strengthen safety standards in Odisha’s urban public transport network.
By combining driver assistance technology with real-time monitoring of driver alertness, CRUT aims to help prevent accidents and provide a safer commuting experience for passengers in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri.
