Odisha CM Announces No New Liquor Shops for Three Years

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced that no new liquor shops will be opened in the state for the next three years as part of the government’s efforts to curb alcohol and drug addiction.

The Chief Minister made the announcement while launching ‘Jiban Zindabad-2.0’, an anti-addiction initiative organised by the Commissionerate Police in Bhubaneswar. According to the CM, the decision has been incorporated into the new Excise Policy prepared on April 1.

Government Announces Three-Year Restriction

CM Majhi said his government has followed a zero-tolerance approach towards addiction since assuming office. He stated that the decision not to allow new liquor shops is aimed at strengthening efforts to control alcohol consumption and prevent the spread of addiction.

The Chief Minister also said that the government intends to continue its crackdown on the illegal trade and use of substances such as liquor, ganja, opium and cocaine.

He urged people to stay away from addictive substances and choose a healthier and safer lifestyle.

Focus on a Drug-Free Odisha

During the programme, CM Majhi highlighted the wider social impact of alcohol and drug addiction. He cited a figure of around 2.8 lakh deaths annually in India due to alcohol consumption and expressed concern over alcohol-related road deaths in Odisha.

The Chief Minister directed enforcement agencies to take strict action against activities linked to narcotics and substance abuse. He also called for greater public participation in efforts to make Odisha free from addiction.

Target of Addiction-Free India by 2029

CM Majhi said Odisha is committed to supporting the national goal of making India addiction-free by the end of 2029, a target announced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

He said the state government would continue strengthening its anti-drug measures and enforcement mechanisms as part of this broader objective.

‘Drug-Free India’ Website Launched

A dedicated ‘Drug-Free India’ website was also launched during the programme. The platform is intended to provide information related to de-addiction centres, complaints and anti-drug awareness photographs, helping citizens access relevant resources and report concerns.

The government’s latest announcement is part of its broader push to address substance abuse through prevention, enforcement, awareness and access to de-addiction services.
