India made a winning start to their FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign, defeating Wales 3-1 in their opening Pool D match at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands. Captain Harmanpreet Singh led the charge with two goals as India secured three valuable points.
India made an aggressive start and quickly established control over the contest. Sanjay opened the scoring in the eighth minute, before Harmanpreet converted a penalty corner shortly afterwards to give India a 2-0 advantage.
Harmanpreet Double Puts India In Command
India continued to dominate possession and create opportunities after the opening quarter. The team maintained pressure on the Welsh defence and remained dangerous from penalty corners.
Harmanpreet struck again in the 43rd minute, converting another penalty corner to complete his brace and extend India’s lead to 3-0.
The Indian captain was subsequently named Player of the Match and said the team had started well but would need to improve its finishing and create more field-goal opportunities in the next game.
Wales Pull One Back Late
Wales managed to find a breakthrough in the final quarter. Sam Welsh scored in the 56th minute following a scramble inside the Indian circle.
The goal was initially reviewed by the officials, with the video referral confirming that the ball had crossed the goal-line. Wales reduced the deficit to 3-1, but India remained composed during the closing stages and protected its lead until the final whistle.
India Eye England Challenge
The victory gives India an important opening win in Pool D, which also features England and Pakistan. India’s next challenge is against England on August 17, with the match expected to provide a much tougher test for the team.
England also began their campaign strongly, defeating Pakistan 4-1, making the upcoming India-England clash particularly important in determining the Pool D standings.
India Aim To End Long World Cup Wait
India’s men’s hockey team entered the 2026 World Cup with ambitions of ending a lengthy wait for another World Cup title. The country’s only men’s Hockey World Cup triumph came in 1975, when India defeated Pakistan in the final.
India finished ninth at the 2023 World Cup in Bhubaneswar, but the team has since built significant momentum through strong performances at the Olympics and continental competitions.
Captain Harmanpreet has stressed the importance of the tournament, particularly for the senior members of the squad, and said the team believes it has a genuine opportunity to challenge for the title.
The opening victory over Wales provides India with a positive platform, but the upcoming encounter with England is likely to offer a clearer indication of the team’s title credentials.
