Odisha Bus Fares Hiked After Diesel Price Increase; New Rates Effective Immediately

Bus travel across Odisha has become slightly more expensive after the State Government approved a revision in stage carriage fares following a recent increase in diesel prices. The revised fares came into effect immediately through an order issued by the Commerce and Transport Department.

The fare hike applies to stage carriage buses operating across the state, excluding town bus services.

Diesel Price Rise Triggers Fare Revision

According to the government order, diesel prices increased from ₹95.87 per litre on May 15, 2026, to ₹100.68 per litre on May 31, 2026.

Officials stated that the increase worked out to ₹4.81 per litre directly and ₹5.61 per litre cumulatively after factoring in carryover adjustments. Based on the fare revision formula notified by the state government, passenger fares have been revised across different categories of buses.

Revised Bus Fare Structure

The new fare rates per kilometer are as follows:

Bus Category Previous Fare Revised Fare
Ordinary Bus 90 paise/km 92 paise/km
Express Bus 94 paise/km 96 paise/km
Deluxe Bus 131 paise/km 135 paise/km
AC Deluxe Bus 159 paise/km 163 paise/km
Super Deluxe Bus 247 paise/km 253 paise/km

Impact on Passengers

While the increase is relatively modest, passengers travelling longer distances may notice a slight rise in ticket prices. The revision is aimed at helping transport operators offset higher fuel costs resulting from the recent increase in diesel prices.

Stage carriage operators had been seeking a fare adjustment in line with fuel price fluctuations, as diesel remains one of the major operating expenses for bus services.

Existing Rules Remain Unchanged

The government has clarified that apart from the revised fare rates, all other provisions and conditions contained in the Transport Department notification issued on February 8, 2021, will continue to remain in force without any changes.

The latest revision is expected to affect thousands of daily commuters and inter-district travellers who rely on bus transportation as one of the most affordable modes of travel across Odisha.
