KKR Stay Alive in IPL 2026 Playoff Race With Crucial Win Over Mumbai Indians

Kolkata Knight Riders kept their IPL 2026 playoff hopes alive with a hard-fought four-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens on Wednesday. In a must-win encounter, KKR produced a disciplined all-round performance to successfully chase down a modest target of 148 and remain in contention for the playoffs.

After winning the toss, KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane opted to bowl first on a challenging Eden Gardens surface that once again favoured the bowlers. Led by the experienced Sunil Narine, Kolkata’s bowling unit delivered a clinical performance to restrict Mumbai Indians to 147/8 in 20 overs.

Mumbai Indians Struggle on Difficult Pitch

Mumbai Indians found scoring difficult throughout the innings as KKR bowlers maintained tight lines and extracted assistance from the surface. The five-time champions, already eliminated from the tournament, failed to build momentum and lost wickets at regular intervals.

KKR’s bowlers controlled the middle overs effectively, preventing MI batters from accelerating. The slow nature of the wicket made stroke-making difficult, and Mumbai could never recover enough to post a competitive total.

Manish Pandey Anchors KKR Chase

Chasing 148, Kolkata Knight Riders got off to a shaky start after losing both openers inside the powerplay. Finn Allen, who had impressed in the previous game, managed just 8 runs before being dismissed by Deepak Chahar.

Captain Ajinkya Rahane also struggled for fluency and departed for 21 off 17 balls after edging one behind. With pressure mounting, veteran batter Manish Pandey stepped up with a composed knock of 45 runs from 33 deliveries, stabilising the innings at a crucial stage.

Pandey then stitched together a valuable 64-run partnership with Rovman Powell, who contributed an aggressive 40 off 30 balls. Their partnership shifted momentum back in KKR’s favour and brought the target within reach.

KKR Finish Chase With Seven Balls to Spare

Despite a few late hiccups, Kolkata Knight Riders comfortably completed the chase in 18.5 overs, securing a much-needed victory with four wickets in hand.

The win lifted KKR from eighth to sixth place in the points table with 13 points from 13 matches. However, their qualification hopes still depend on other results. Kolkata will now closely monitor Rajasthan Royals’ clash against Mumbai Indians before their final league game against Delhi Capitals.

If Rajasthan Royals win their upcoming fixture, KKR’s playoff hopes will officially end. On the other hand, a Royals defeat would keep Kolkata alive heading into their last match of the league stage.

Mumbai Indians’ Poor Season Continues

For Mumbai Indians, the defeat marked their ninth loss of the season in 13 matches. The disappointing campaign leaves the five-time champions second from bottom in the IPL 2026 standings with only one match remaining.

The result further highlighted MI’s struggles this season, particularly with batting consistency and adapting to difficult conditions away from home.
