India–Iran Dialogue Remains Positive Despite West Asia Crisis, Says Representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader

Amid rising tensions in West Asia, Abdul Majid Hakeem Ilahi, the Representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader in India, has described the ongoing diplomatic engagement between India and Iran as “good and successful,” highlighting continued dialogue despite the volatile regional security situation.

Ilahi stated that Iran remains committed to diplomacy while also maintaining its readiness to defend its sovereignty if required. He emphasised that Tehran did not initiate the current hostilities and had previously made diplomatic progress with the United States before tensions escalated.

Expressing appreciation for the support shown by the Indian public, Ilahi described India as a nation rooted in justice, wisdom and peace, drawing inspiration from the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.

High-Level Diplomatic Engagement Continues

Diplomatic coordination between the two countries has intensified in recent weeks. S. Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, has held multiple discussions with Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi.

According to officials from the Ministry of External Affairs (India), the talks have focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and coordinating positions within the BRICS framework. A major part of the discussions has also centred on safeguarding maritime trade routes and ensuring uninterrupted global energy supply during the ongoing conflict involving Israel, the United States, and Iran.

Experts say these diplomatic engagements are crucial as tensions in the region threaten vital shipping routes used for global oil and gas transportation.

India Emphasises Energy Security and Citizen Safety

India’s concerns were also reflected in a recent conversation between Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

During the discussion, Modi expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in the region and the resulting loss of civilian lives and damage to infrastructure. He stressed that the safety of Indian citizens in the region and the uninterrupted supply of energy resources remain India’s top strategic priorities.

The Prime Minister also called for a return to diplomatic engagement and peaceful dialogue to prevent further escalation.

Global Leaders Call for De-escalation

The growing crisis has also drawn international concern. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, recently warned that the ongoing conflict poses a serious threat to global peace and stability.

Guterres urged all sides to immediately halt hostilities, respect international law, protect civilians, and return to negotiations. He stressed that de-escalation and diplomacy remain the only viable path forward to prevent further humanitarian suffering in the region.

As the situation in West Asia remains tense, India continues to balance its diplomatic engagement with regional powers while safeguarding its strategic interests, including energy security and the safety of its nationals abroad.
