PM Modi Becomes First Leader to Receive ‘Speaker of the Knesset Medal’, Israel’s Highest Parliamentary Honour

In a historic gesture, the Knesset on Wednesday conferred the “Speaker of the Knesset Medal” — its highest parliamentary honour — upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi following his address to the Israeli Parliament. He is the first global leader to receive this prestigious recognition.

The award was presented in acknowledgement of PM Modi’s “exceptional contribution through his personal leadership” in strengthening and advancing the strategic partnership between India and Israel. The honour was conferred after his speech, which drew a standing ovation and enthusiastic applause from members across party lines.

Historic Honour and Parliamentary Engagement

Following the ceremony, Prime Minister Modi interacted warmly with Israeli lawmakers, with several Members of Parliament gathering for photographs and selfies — reflecting the cordial atmosphere in the House.

In his address, PM Modi expressed deep gratitude for the recognition and highlighted the enduring and deep-rooted friendship between the two democracies. Notably, he is among the rare world leaders to have received top civilian honours from both Israel and Palestine. In 2018, he was awarded the Grand Collar of the State of Palestine, the highest Palestinian honour bestowed upon foreign leaders.

Emphasis on Shared Civilisational Links

During his speech, PM Modi noted that there is widespread admiration in India for Israel’s resilience, innovation, and achievements. He underscored that ties between the peoples of India and Israel span over two millennia. Referring to historical texts, he pointed out that the Book of Esther mentions India as “Hodu,” while the Talmud records ancient trade links with the Indian subcontinent.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the unique history of Jewish communities in India, stating that they have lived without fear of persecution or discrimination and have contributed significantly to Indian society. He described this legacy as a matter of national pride.

Strengthening People-to-People Ties

Emphasising that people-to-people engagement forms the core of bilateral relations, PM Modi observed the growing popularity of Yoga and Ayurveda in Israel. He invited more young Israelis to visit India to explore its culture, heritage, and opportunities.

He further noted that the Indian Parliament has established a Parliamentary Friendship Group for Israel and called for enhanced exchanges between Members of Parliament from both nations to deepen democratic engagement and mutual understanding.

The conferral of the Speaker of the Knesset Medal marks a significant milestone in India-Israel relations, symbolising the expanding strategic, cultural, and parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.
