2026 Winter Olympics Conclude with Grand Closing Ceremony at Verona Arena

The Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics officially came to an end with a spectacular closing ceremony held at the historic Verona Arena in northern Italy. Although no competitive events were staged in Verona — located roughly 75 miles from Milan — the city hosted a vibrant farewell celebration marking the conclusion of the Winter Games.

The ceremony opened with a tribute to Italy’s rich operatic heritage, followed by the grand entrance of flagbearers from all 92 participating nations. Athletes walked into the ancient amphitheater through elaborate stage props inspired by Aida, accompanied by iconic Italian film music.

In a symbolic moment, the Olympic flame — referred to as the “Drop of Fire” and carried inside a glass vessel — was brought into the arena to illuminate the Olympic rings before the traditional parade of athletes. While the Olympic custom encourages athletes to march together regardless of nationality, many teams remained grouped under their national flags.

Final Medals Awarded and Volunteers Honored

The last medals of the Games were presented in the men’s and women’s 50km mass start cross-country skiing events. Organizers also paid tribute to thousands of volunteers whose efforts ensured the smooth conduct of the two-week sporting spectacle.

The evening concluded with live performances by internationally known artists, including Major Lazer and Italian singer-songwriter Achille Lauro.

IOC President Praises Athletes’ Spirit

In her closing address, International Olympic Committee president Kirsty Coventry commended the athletes for their courage and sportsmanship, describing the Games as a celebration of excellence, respect and unity. She highlighted how the event showcased the unifying power of sport in a divided world.

The Milan-Cortina Games featured 116 medal events and witnessed several historic achievements by participating nations.

Historic Performance for Team GB

Team GB delivered one of its strongest Winter Olympic performances, securing five medals — including a record three golds — to finish 15th overall in the medal standings. It marked the first time Britain has claimed more than one gold medal at a single Winter Games.

Skeleton athlete Matt Weston captured two gold medals in the men’s skeleton and the mixed team event alongside Tabby Stoecker. Meanwhile, snowboarder Charlotte Bankes earned gold in the mixed team snowboard cross with Huw Nightingale — the first time British athletes have won an Olympic title in a snow-based event.

Team GB also secured silver in men’s curling, and Zoe Atkin added a bronze medal in women’s ski halfpipe on the final day of competition.

Landmark Win for Brazil

In another historic milestone, Lucas Pinheiro Braathen claimed gold in the men’s giant slalom, becoming the first athlete from a South American nation to win a Winter Olympic gold medal.

With record-breaking performances, emotional farewells and memorable sporting moments, the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics concluded as one of the most remarkable editions in Winter Games history.
