Geeta Pattnaik Passes Away in Cuttack After Brain Stroke, Odia Music World Mourns Veteran Voice

In a deeply saddening development for the Odia music fraternity, veteran singer Geeta Pattnaik passed away on Sunday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Cuttack. She had reportedly fallen ill during a literary programme earlier this week, and her condition worsened rapidly thereafter. She was under intensive medical supervision but could not recover.

According to sources, the noted singer suffered a cerebral stroke on February 12 and was immediately admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Doctors continued treatment for several days, but her health remained critical. Her demise has triggered widespread grief among artistes, cultural organisations, and admirers across Odisha.

Geeta Pattnaik was regarded as one of the most recognisable and expressive voices in Odia music from the 1970s onward. Over a career spanning nearly three decades, she recorded numerous memorable songs and contributed significantly to the growth and popularity of modern Odia film and non-film music.

She frequently collaborated with legendary composer-singer Akshaya Mohanty, and the duo created several enduring musical pieces that remain popular with listeners even today. Their collaborations were known for lyrical richness and emotional depth, helping define an era of Odia music.

Among her most celebrated songs is “Phur Kina Udigala Bani” from the Odia film Jajabar, which continues to be cherished by audiences. Other well-known tracks rendered by her include “Emiti Pua Ku Mu Baha Huenti”, “Baha Mu Hebi”, and “Mo Dehare”. She also lent her voice to evergreen devotional and cultural numbers such as “Danei Das Kahere Bhai,” showcasing her versatility across genres.
