At least three coaches of the Chennai–New Jalpaiguri Express derailed near Jakhapura railway station in Odisha’s Jajpur district on Thursday morning, triggering a brief emergency response from railway authorities. Officials confirmed that no passenger was injured and there was no loss of life in the incident.
The train, No. 22611 Chennai Central–New Jalpaiguri Express, was moving at a very slow speed when the derailment occurred, according to railway sources.
Derailment Occurs Within Yard Limits
Railway officials said that one AC coach and two General coaches derailed within the yard limits at Jakhapura, significantly reducing the risk of casualties. As the incident took place in a controlled zone and not on the main running line, passenger train services in the section remained unaffected.
Authorities immediately initiated steps to manage passenger safety and convenience. The derailed coaches are being detached from the rake, and passengers travelling in those coaches are being accommodated in other coaches. Railway officials also said that additional coaches are being arranged and will be attached if required to ensure smooth onward travel.
Emergency Teams Rushed to the Spot
Following the derailment, the Railways activated emergency response protocols. An Accident Relief Train (ART) from Bhubaneswar and Khurda Road was dispatched at 08:53 hours to assist in restoration work. In addition, Accident Relief Medical Equipment (ARME) from Khurda Road was sent to the site as a precautionary measure.
A rescue team from Bhadrak was also mobilized and dispatched towards the accident location. Senior railway officials reached the spot shortly after the incident and are closely supervising restoration operations and safety assessments.
Cause of Derailment Under Investigation
The exact cause of the derailment is yet to be ascertained. Railway authorities are expected to conduct a detailed technical inquiry, including inspection of tracks, signalling systems, and rolling stock, to determine the reason behind the incident.
Officials reiterated that passenger safety remains the top priority and assured that all necessary steps are being taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
