Mumbai: In a historic moment for Maharashtra’s political landscape, Sunetra Pawar on Saturday took oath as the state’s first woman Deputy Chief Minister, marking a significant milestone amid a period of political transition. Popularly known as ‘Vahini’, Sunetra Pawar assumed office days after the tragic demise of her husband, senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who was killed in a plane crash earlier this week.
Ahead of the oath-taking ceremony, the NCP formally informed Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of Sunetra Pawar’s election as the party’s legislature party leader. During a meeting held at Vidhan Bhavan, NCP legislators unanimously elected her to lead the party in the Assembly, clearing the way for her elevation to the Deputy Chief Minister’s post in the Mahayuti government.
Portfolios and Swearing-in Ceremony
All ministerial portfolios earlier handled by Ajit Pawar, except Finance and Planning, have been entrusted to Sunetra Pawar. The oath-taking ceremony, held at 5 pm, was a restrained and dignified affair, limited to essential administrative formalities. The event was attended by the Chief Minister, Cabinet Ministers, the Chief Secretary, the Director General of Police, and a few close family members. In view of recent events, no elaborate celebrations were organised.
Background, Education and Public Life
Born in 1963 in Dharashiv (formerly Osmanabad), Sunetra Pawar hails from a family with a strong legacy in public service. Her father, Bajirao Patil, was a respected regional leader, while her brother Padamsinh Bajirao Patil played an influential role in district-level politics during the 1980s.
An alumna of SB College, Aurangabad, Sunetra Pawar holds a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree. Over the years, she has built a reputation beyond politics, particularly in the industrial and education sectors. She has been actively involved in managing the Baramati High-Tech Textile Park, where she oversaw production, investments, employment generation, and initiatives aimed at women’s empowerment.
As a trustee of Vidya Pratishthan, one of Maharashtra’s premier educational institutions, she supervises academic and administrative operations catering to over 25,000 students, underscoring her long-standing engagement with social development.
A Moment of Continuity and Change
Sunetra Pawar’s elevation reflects both continuity in leadership and a new chapter in Maharashtra politics, as the state witnesses its first woman Deputy Chief Minister during a time of emotional and political upheaval. Her appointment has been widely seen as a symbol of resilience and stability, with expectations high as she steps into a role carrying both responsibility and historic significance.
