25 New Electric Buses Flagged Off from State-of-the-Art CRUT Depot in Berhampur

Berhampur, Odisha: In a major step towards strengthening sustainable urban mobility, 25 new electric buses were flagged off today from a state-of-the-art Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) depot in Berhampur. The launch marks a significant milestone in Odisha’s transition towards clean, energy-efficient public transportation.

The induction of these zero-emission buses is aimed at improving last-mile connectivity, reducing vehicular pollution, and offering a reliable, affordable, and environmentally friendly commuting option for residents of Berhampur and surrounding areas.

Modern Infrastructure for Electric Mobility

The newly developed depot is equipped with advanced charging stations, automated maintenance systems, and real-time monitoring facilities to ensure efficient operation of the electric bus fleet. Officials said the depot has been designed keeping future expansion in mind, allowing the integration of more electric vehicles as demand grows.

Each electric bus features comfortable seating, low-floor access for senior citizens and differently-abled passengers, CCTV surveillance, GPS tracking, and digital display systems for improved passenger convenience and safety.

Boost to Green Transport and Urban Connectivity

According to transport officials, the new buses will operate on important city and suburban routes, connecting educational institutions, healthcare facilities, markets, and residential hubs. The move is expected to significantly reduce dependence on diesel-powered vehicles, helping cut carbon emissions and noise pollution in the city.

The initiative aligns with both national clean mobility missions and the Odisha government’s vision of sustainable urban development. CRUT has been steadily expanding its electric bus services across various cities in the state under the Mo Bus and city bus programs.

Economic and Environmental Impact

Apart from environmental benefits, the electric bus project is also expected to generate employment opportunities in operations, maintenance, and depot management. Officials highlighted that electric buses have lower operational costs in the long run, making public transport more efficient and economically viable.

Residents have welcomed the move, expressing optimism that the new services will reduce traffic congestion and provide a smoother daily commute.

Future Plans

CRUT authorities indicated that more electric buses and depots are planned in the coming months as part of a phased expansion strategy. The focus remains on enhancing service quality, route coverage, and passenger experience while supporting Odisha’s climate-friendly transportation goals.
