Air India on Tuesday issued a comprehensive travel advisory for passengers scheduled to fly on the morning of January 7, warning of possible flight disruptions due to dense fog and severely reduced visibility over Delhi and several parts of northern India. The airline cautioned that adverse weather conditions could result in delays, diversions, and cancellations, with a ripple effect likely across its domestic and international network.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Air India said it is closely tracking weather updates and has activated contingency plans to manage the impact of fog-related disruptions. The airline assured passengers that additional ground staff have been deployed at major airports to provide assistance, help with rebooking, and address passenger concerns in the event of operational delays.
FogCare Initiative to Minimize Passenger Inconvenience
As part of its FogCare initiative, Air India is proactively notifying passengers whose flights may be affected by poor visibility. Under this initiative, travellers are being offered flexible travel options, including complimentary rescheduling and full refunds without cancellation charges if flights are delayed or cancelled due to weather conditions. The airline said the initiative is aimed at reducing uncertainty and stress for passengers during the winter fog season.
Passengers flying on Wednesday have been advised to regularly check their flight status through the airline’s official website or mobile application before leaving for the airport. Air India also urged travellers to reach airports well in advance, as fog-related congestion and security checks could further delay departures.
Delhi Airport Operating Under CAT III Conditions
Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport is currently operating under CAT III conditions, which allow aircraft to take off and land in extremely low visibility using advanced instrument landing systems and specially trained flight crews. While CAT III operations help maintain air traffic movement during fog, airport authorities have warned that weather-related delays remain possible due to spacing requirements between aircraft and safety protocols.
Officials said that although arrivals and departures are continuing, fog intensity during early morning hours could impact flight schedules, particularly long-haul and connecting flights. Passengers have been requested to cooperate with airline and airport staff during this period.
Cold Wave Intensifies Weather Challenges
Adding to the disruption, the national capital has recorded its first “cold day” of the season. Maximum temperatures in Delhi have dropped sharply, hovering between 13°C and 16°C, significantly below normal levels. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that cold and foggy conditions are likely to persist over the next few days across northern India.
According to the IMD, a cold day is declared when the maximum temperature remains 4.5 to 6.4 degrees Celsius below the seasonal average. Meteorologists attributed the current conditions to the inflow of cold northerly winds and stable atmospheric conditions, which favour the formation of dense fog.
Passengers Urged to Stay Updated
Air India has advised passengers to remain alert to travel advisories and weather updates, especially those with early morning departures or connecting flights. Travellers are also encouraged to keep contact details updated with the airline to receive real-time alerts regarding schedule changes.
With winter fog continuing to pose operational challenges, airlines and airport authorities are working to ensure passenger safety while minimizing inconvenience. Passengers have been urged to plan their journeys carefully and exercise patience during this period of weather-related disruptions.
