Cold weather conditions across Odisha are expected to intensify from December 25, with the winter chill likely to persist for at least the next seven days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday. The weather agency indicated that there will be no immediate relief from cold nights as seasonal conditions strengthen across the state.
According to IMD, the exit of an active western disturbance will allow dry and cold north-westerly winds to dominate the region. These winds are expected to reinforce winter conditions, keeping nights cold across most parts of Odisha. While a sharp drop in minimum temperatures is not forecast at present, the prevailing chill is likely to remain steady.
No Major Temperature Fluctuation Expected
IMD officials noted that minimum temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged over the coming week. However, winter conditions will continue to be felt strongly, particularly during nighttime and early morning hours.
“There is very little chance of any significant variation in minimum temperatures over the next seven days,” said Manorama Mohanty, Director of IMD Bhubaneswar. “At most, one or two districts may see a slight rise of around 1 to 2 degrees Celsius.”
Fog to Add to Winter Discomfort
In addition to the cold, foggy conditions are expected to prevail across the state. IMD has forecast light to moderate fog at several places for the next five days, especially during early morning hours. Fog is likely to affect visibility in low-lying areas, highways and rural pockets, potentially impacting road travel.
The combination of cold winds and persistent fog is expected to maintain typical winter discomfort across Odisha, even if temperatures do not drop sharply.
Residents have been advised to remain cautious during early morning travel and take necessary precautions against cold conditions as winter continues to tighten its grip over the state.
