A low-pressure area has developed over the South Andaman Sea and adjoining Malacca Strait under the influence of an active cyclonic circulation, the Regional Meteorological Centre confirmed on Saturday. Meteorologists predict that the system is likely to intensify into a depression over the central parts of the South Bay of Bengal by the evening of November 24.
According to weather officials, the system is expected to gradually strengthen further over the southwest Bay of Bengal during the following 48 hours while moving in a northwestward direction. Depending on sea surface temperatures and atmospheric conditions, it may eventually intensify into a cyclonic storm.
Odisha Likely to Witness Weather Changes from Next Week
While Odisha is expected to remain dry for the next five days, minimum temperatures may rise by 2 to 3°C, offering a brief relief from the recent winter chill. However, weather conditions across coastal districts are likely to change significantly next week as the system approaches the coastline.
Cloudy skies with light to moderate rainfall have been forecast for coastal Odisha toward the end of November. Under the influence of this system, rainfall activity is expected to begin over the state from November 27, with some districts likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall during this period.
Farmers Concerned About Crop Damage
The unseasonal rain forecast has sparked concern among farmers across Odisha. With the winter season already underway and crop harvesting in progress, heavy rains could pose a threat to standing paddy and seasonal crops. The final week of November is considered crucial for harvesting, making the potential weather disturbance a matter of serious concern for the agricultural community.
Officials said a clearer picture of the system’s intensity and potential landfall, if any, would emerge in the coming days.
