Dubai: An Indian Air Force (IAF) Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) reportedly crashed during a flight demonstration at the Dubai Air Show on Thursday. The incident occurred around 2:10 pm local time at the Al Maktoum International Airport, where the prestigious global aviation event is being held.
Thick black smoke was seen billowing from the crash site near the airfield. The condition of the pilot remains unclear, as authorities have not yet confirmed whether the pilot managed to eject safely before the crash.
Tejas at Dubai Air Show for the First Time
The Indian Air Force had announced its participation in the biennial airshow with the indigenous LCA Tejas and the renowned Suryakiran Aerobatic Team. The aircraft had arrived at Al Maktoum Airbase last week to take part in aerial displays and showcase India’s growing defence aviation capabilities.
“The global event, with participation from over 100 Air Forces, aims to enhance interoperability, operational edge, and foster military as well as business cooperation,” the IAF had posted on X (formerly Twitter) prior to the event.
Second Ever Tejas Crash Since Induction
This marks only the second crash involving a Tejas aircraft since its induction. The first incident took place in March 2024, when a Tejas jet crashed near Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, during an operational training sortie.
Developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Tejas is India’s first indigenously built supersonic fighter aircraft and is a symbol of the country’s ‘Make in India’ defence capabilities.
Dubai Air Show 2025: A Global Aviation Hub
The Dubai Air Show, which began on November 17 and was scheduled to conclude on November 21, coincides with the 40th anniversary of host airline Emirates. The event has emerged as a major hub for aircraft deals, defence collaborations, and technological showcases.
Industry professionals from 150 countries attended the show, with leading aerospace and defence giants such as Airbus, Lockheed Martin, Dassault Aviation, Embraer, Bombardier, Calidus, and Thales participating.
Emirates and Fly Dubai announced significant aircraft orders during the event, making it one of the largest commercial airshow gatherings in recent years.
Investigation Underway
Authorities in Dubai, along with the Indian Air Force and event officials, are expected to conduct a detailed investigation into the cause of the crash. Further information on pilot safety and damage assessment is awaited.
