Boita Bandana Mahotsav Brings Waves of Heritage and Harmony to Gopalpur Beach

Gopalpur-on-Sea, November 5, 2025 – The rhythmic crash of the waves at Gopalpur Beach blended seamlessly with the beats of traditional drums, chants of “Aa ka ma boi, panaguathoi,” and the joyous cheers of thousands as the Boita Bandana Mahotsav 2025 was celebrated in all its grandeur. The event, a vibrant tribute to Odisha’s glorious maritime past, transformed the golden sands of Gopalpur into a living canvas of culture, devotion, and festivity.

The festival, organized by the District Administration in collaboration with the Department of Tourism and local cultural organizations, drew enthusiastic participation from locals, tourists, and artists from across the state. This year’s theme—“Sailing Through Time: Honoring the Spirit of Maritime Odisha”—captured the essence of the ancient trade traditions that once connected Kalinga to distant lands like Bali, Java, and Sumatra.

The Sacred Morning Ritual: Boita Bandana Ceremony

The day began before sunrise as devotees, dressed in traditional attire, gathered along the shoreline carrying miniature boats made of banana bark, paper, and thermocol, decorated with diyas, betel leaves, and flowers. The scene was magical—hundreds of small illuminated boats floating on the calm blue waters, symbolizing the ancient seafarers of Kalinga who once set sail on the auspicious day of Kartika Purnima.

Women sang traditional Boita Bandana geetas, while elders narrated the stories of the “Sadhabas,” the brave traders who took Odisha’s culture and commerce across the seas centuries ago. As the first rays of the sun touched the sea, thousands of devotees offered prayers to Varuna, the Sea God, seeking blessings for prosperity and peace.

Grand Inaugural Ceremony: A Cultural Extravaganza Begins

The formal inauguration of the Boita Bandana Utsav – 2025 was held at the main stage near Gopalpur Beach promenade. The event was graced by dignitaries from the district administration, cultural department, and local representatives. The lighting of the ceremonial lamp marked the beginning of a day-long celebration filled with performances, exhibitions, and competitions reflecting Odisha’s rich maritime and cultural heritage.

In his inaugural address, the Chief Guest highlighted how festivals like Boita Bandana preserve Odisha’s identity and pride, connecting today’s generation with their glorious past. He also lauded the efforts of the district administration and cultural organizations in making Gopalpur Beach a hub for heritage-based tourism.

The cultural evening opened with a melodious song by Sargam, Gopalpur, setting a soulful tone for the night. This was followed by a captivating Odissi performance by Kala Bikas Kendra, Chatrapur, where graceful movements and classical rhythm beautifully portrayed Odisha’s rich artistic heritage.

The stage then came alive with diverse dance forms from across the region — from the expressive Kathapada Dance by Bibidha Foundation for Art & Culture, Chatrapur to the energetic Jaysri Mix by Rock Star Dance Group, Berhampur. The evening continued to enthrall audiences with Bihu, Semi-Classical, Sambalpuri, Dhemsa, and Freestyle performances, each narrating tales of tradition, emotion, and joy.

The thunderous applause and cheers from the crowd echoed the success of the evening — a true reflection of Odisha’s vibrant culture and timeless artistry.

Sea-side Crafts and Cuisine: A Feast for the Senses

A major attraction of this year’s event was the “Maritime Heritage Craft & Food Fair”, which showcased the craftsmanship and culinary diversity of Odisha. More than 50 stalls were set up along the beach displaying handicrafts such as Pattachitra paintings, silver filigree work, appliqué craft from Pipili, stone carvings from Konark, and handmade decorative Boitas crafted by local artisans.

Visitors thronged the food zone, where traditional Odia delicacies like pakhala, dahibaraaloodum, podapitha, arisapitha, and seafood platters were served fresh. The aroma of authentic Odia spices mixed with the salty sea breeze created an unforgettable sensory experience.

Sand Art and Photography Exhibition: Stories Etched in Sand

Adding artistic depth to the festival was an open-air sand art exhibition curated by renowned sand artists from across Odisha. The central attraction was a stunning sculpture depicting ancient sailors navigating waves under the full moon, symbolizing faith and courage. Other creations showcased themes like “Save Our Oceans” and “Odisha’s Maritime Trade.”

Cultural Performances

As the sun began to set, a vibrant cultural performance moved along the beach road featuring tableaux from various blocks of Ganjam district. Each tableau depicted a slice of Odia culture—from traditional boat craftsmanship to tribal music and dance forms. The parade concluded at the main stage, where community troupes presented musical dramas celebrating the bond between the sea and the people of Odisha.

Performances by school and college students brought youthful energy to the evening. Themes such as eco-conscious celebration, revival of maritime tourism, and women’s participation in heritage conservation were highlighted through creative skits and dance dramas.

Musical Night: Rhythms of the Sea

The festival reached its crescendo with a soul-stirring Musical Night featuring celebrated Odia playback singers Kuldeep Pattnaik, Priyanka Swain, Sheetal Kunmun, and Sri Alok Kundu. Their melodious voices filled the evening air with songs dedicated to the sea and the Sadhabas, evoking a deep sense of nostalgia and pride. The night’s highlight was a fusion performance that beautifully blended traditional Odia instruments like the mardala and mahuri with modern rhythms, symbolizing Odisha’s timeless spirit — rooted in heritage, yet resonating with contemporary harmony.

A Message of Heritage and Harmony

Throughout the day, the Boita Bandana Festival at Gopalpur Beach stood as a living symbol of Odisha’s maritime heritage, its spiritual devotion, and its collective cultural pride. Beyond rituals and entertainment, the event carried a profound message—to cherish the past, celebrate the present, and sail confidently into the future.
