In a major move to expand its footprint in India, OpenAI has announced one year of free access to ChatGPT Go for all users in the country, starting November 4, 2025. The announcement coincides with the company’s upcoming DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru, which will bring together developers, researchers, and AI enthusiasts from across India.
What is ChatGPT Go?
ChatGPT Go is OpenAI’s premium version of ChatGPT, built to provide advanced tools, faster performance, and greater flexibility. Powered by the company’s latest GPT-5 model, it offers:
-
Higher daily message limits
-
Longer memory for ongoing conversations
-
Faster response times
-
File uploads and image analysis capabilities
-
Visual generation tools and complex query handling
Essentially, ChatGPT Go gives users full access to the power of OpenAI’s flagship chatbot without the restrictions of the free tier, enabling smoother workflow, better content generation, and advanced data handling.
Why India Gets It for Free
OpenAI said the initiative was a token of appreciation for the “enthusiasm and creativity” of Indian users. India has rapidly become ChatGPT’s second-largest market, with the number of paid subscribers doubling within a month of the Go plan’s launch in August.
Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, stated, “Ahead of our first DevDay Exchange event in India, we’re making ChatGPT Go freely available for a year to help more people across India easily access and benefit from advanced AI.”
All Indian users who sign up during the promotional window will receive one year of free ChatGPT Go access. Existing paid subscribers in India will also be covered under this offer, with OpenAI set to release claim details shortly.
OpenAI’s India Strategy
This offer is part of OpenAI’s “India-first” strategy, aligning with the government’s IndiaAI Mission, which aims to accelerate AI adoption across education, industry, and research. The company is also planning to set up offices in New Delhi and Bengaluru to strengthen local operations and collaborations.
OpenAI’s move mirrors steps by competitors like Anthropic, whose leadership recently met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss AI partnerships and innovation opportunities.
The one-year free access to ChatGPT Go underscores India’s growing significance in the global AI ecosystem, reaffirming OpenAI’s commitment to make cutting-edge AI accessible to millions of new users across the country.
